He was known as an author and printmaker, as well as a free-lance artist. After graduating from Columbia University in 1926, Ward continued his studies at the Academy of Graphic Arts in Leipzig, Germany. While he was there, he discovered a book that told a complete story in woodcuts by Belgian artist Frans Masereel. Ward's interpretations essentially revived the art form. In 1929, his first book was published, "God's Man," a novel in woodcuts, the first of its kind. Ward's woodcuts were later collected by Graham Nash and rock legend Mick Jagger even used Ward's woodcut from "God's Man" for the inner sleeve of his album "She's the Boss" (1985). Ward's pioneer style is sometimes said to be inspired by art created for Walter Knott at Knott's Berry Farm in Buena Park, California by artist Paul von Klieben (1891 – 1953) An exceptional book as interpreted by one of the 20th century's great artists and illustrators.
