Description: A collection of tales surrounding the individual women of Shakespeare's plays, these are 10 tales broken up across 2 volumes (the first and second series) by Mary Cowden Clarke. This particular edition was published in 1882 by A.C Armstrong and Sons and features absolutely beautiful red cloth bound hardcover boards with gild stamped title work on the front panel and spine of both volumes. These books feature characters in their own stories (with individual title pages) including: Ophelia Juliet Rosalind and Celia Katharina and Bianca Desdemona Meg and Alice and several others. These are short tales involving each of these women set around their plays. The conditions will be noted by volume: Volume 1 First Series: The corners and edges have significant shelfwear and the outer edges of the panels have darkening discoloration/staining of the red cloth. The spine is very much darkened. It does look like sun exposure is to blame (please review images). There are some fade spots and scuffs on the rear panel. Page edges are brown with the top edge a particular dark greyish hue. It might have been previously stained a different color. There is some chipping of the fabric around the joint between the spine and front panel. Previous owner gift inscription on the blank flyleaf page dated Christmas 1883. Original tissueguard is present on the frontispiece. Front hinge is cracked on the preface opening page. But binding does appear to be solid all the way through. Pages # 489 Item Dimensions: 8"x5.8"x1.25" Volume 2 Second Series: Scuffing and fade spots are present in number on the front panel. The corners and edges have significant shelfwear. Page edges are browned and the top edge is a similar shade to the first series and the spine is a similar darkened color. There are some scuffs on the rear panel and discoloration around the edges of the front and rear panels. Some wear spots on the joints between the spine and both panels. The front hinge is cracked by the table of contents page with webbing exposed. Previous owner gift inscription dated Christmas 1883 on the blank flyleaf page and the tissueguard is still present on the frontispiece. Binding and rear hinges appear to both be in solid shape.
