Description: "The Drama of the Medieval Church" is a 2 volume, 6.5"x9.5" hardcover set written by Karl Young and published in 1962 by Clarendon Press (Oxford). It first appeared in 1933. Vol. I has 708 pages while Vol. II has 612 pages. Both have 12 black-and-white plates. From the flap: "The essential purpose of this work is to assemble, in their authentic forms, the dramatic compositions which were employed by the medieval Church in Western Europe as a part of public worship, and which are commonly regarded as the origins of modern drama. The subject is studied in all its aspects, with a full collection of texts, many of which have not been printed hitherto. The book comprises sections on the Liturgy of the Church of Rome and on plays dealing with the Resurrection and the Passion, with the Nativity, and with other subjects from the Bible and from Legends. There is a full bibliography and a comprehensive index." The books are in good condition. The dust jackets have various tears, chips and creases at the edges, a few stains and scratches, are browned at the spines. The black cloth boards show light edge wear and scuffing. The previous owner wrote his name and the year on each first page, and there's an old price in pencil to that page in Vol. I. The bindings are firm.
