He fought in Lee’s army, later served as a Second Lieutenant, and was captured at Petersburg and made a prisoner of war. Most letters are from Chattanooga, Lynchburg, Fairfax Station, the Shenandoah Valley, Mitchells Ford, Camp Lay (near Centreville), Signal Station Bull Run, Camp Carondelet, on the Rappahannock, near Fredericksburg, at Orange CH, the trenches of Richmond, City Point, Fort Delaware as a POW, as well as other locations. A list of the many battles he participated in is in the back of the book. He enlisted at the age of 19 years old. His brother Henry enlisted the following year, at the age of 15. These were not slave holders; their father was an accountant; their mother was an Englishwoman. These are James letters to his father and brother, together with a few other family letters written during that interval. They recount his experiences during that time to his family in New Orleans. His service record comes in the included Publisher’s Advertising Flyer as well and is also in the back of the book. Throughout the course of the war he fought the big battles and saw that terrible war from the losing side…but he was no a loser – only a young man caught fast in one of the great tragedies of our Nation’s history. Carefully preserved through four generations of his family, the letters have been reproduced faithfully an in their entirety. Unedited, uncut, and thoroughly annotated, some words had been crossed out. Some words were illegible. In a very few cases, punctuation or spelling has been clarified for the convenience of the modern readers, as the originals were often written in haste and in surroundings that made writing difficult. His words constitute a record of historic times, but they are also a very human narrative of a boy growing to manhood and being changed and formed by those times. The Addendum provides his service records, Selected reports from the original Muster Rolls and Reports of Company A and Company K, a listing of battles, and more.
