Description: This scarce little book was written by the Infamous Lola Montez. A superstar of her day. Other listings state that there are only a handful of copies known. This copy is in nice, solid condition. The boards have only slight wear. The gutters and spine have no issues. The gilding is rather faded but still readable. There are no tears, folds, or loose pages. They do have scattered light foxing. The hinges are tight and perfect. The half title page is present. Other than an owner's name dated 1860, along with his book plate, there are no marks of any kind. The one apology is the first brown end page having a repaired rip. There is no tape and it is solid and not fragile. It is quite an interesting read "With Hints To Gentlemen on the Art Of Fascinating". Shipping includes insurance... Eliza Rosanna Gilbert, Countess of Landsfeld (1821-1861), better known by the stage name Lola Montez, was an Irish dancer and actress who became famous as a Spanish dancer, and mistress of King Ludwig I of Bavaria. Montez had affairs with Franz Liszt, Alexander Dumas, and others. As a performer, she most likely engaged in sex work as well; in polite society she was described as a courtesan. Aspects of her story have been portrayed in many period and modern films and novels, and she may be the inspiration for Conan Doyle's Irene Adler. In Munich, she began an affair with King Ludwig I of Bavaria, who gave her the title of Countess of Landsfeld in 1847 and granted her a large annuity. As the king's mistress, she wielded significant political power and influence, and used it in favor of liberalism. When the revolution came in 1848, however, she fled Germany and eventually relocated to California, where she became a sensation. Her home in Grass Valley is a California historical landmark.
