It is a beautiful and particularly detailed painting! The United States Post Office issued this stamp to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the American Medical Association and to honor the profession that has so positively impacted lives of almost all persons. The AMA was founded by a remarkable thirty-year old doctor named Nathan Davis in 1847. At the age of twenty he earned his medical degree; at the age of thirty he founded the AMA; at the age of forty he founded Northwestern University Medical School. He actively practiced medicine until his death at age 87. A bit more history: The United States Post Office issued its first stamp on July 1, 1847. Since that time, over 5000 stamps have been released. Each stamp is given its own identification number called a Scott Number. This stamp has been designated as Scott Number 949.
