Description: For your consideration is a PRESS MOLDED BOTTLE BY TATSUZO SHIMAOKA (1911 - 2007). a former JAPANESE LIVING NATIONAL TREASURE. It is a light cream and brown color. There are quite a few interesting small iron deposit burn outs throughout the surface of the bottle. Shimaoka dug his own local clay during the early part of his career which often contained iron that burned out during the firing and is usually considered a positive, not a negative, as they represent the source of the clay. This Jogon Zogan Rope Impression design is what I refer to as 'Herringbone' and is one of four frequently used patterns by Shimaoka. There are no chips or cracks. There is no box and It is not signed which indicates that it is probably an early piece as he did not sign his work initially. The bottom of this piece has two unusual 1/2" circles that have a convex dot of white glaze in the center area of each circle (see photos 3 and 4). I have not seen this before and do not know what they signify but they add a very interesting aspect to this piece. This is a fairly large bottle at 9 5/8" (24 cm) Height x 4" (10 cm) Square. (Photos 5 - 11 are some other listings showing work by Shimaoka, F. Carlton Ball, David Leach and William Chappelow). (C - 539)
