The retainer screw is supposed to screw into a little metal tab at the top of the niches. These tabs can break off or the threaded hole can corrode if anything other than a stainless steel or brass retainer screw is used. The “light wedge” is an adjustable plastic wedge and stainless steel screw that goes through the light ring. After the bottom of the fixture catches on the niches bottom the fixture should be tilted up until the fixture is flush with the wall and the wedge is inside the niches.
