Great for landscaping, the magnolia grows quickly with adequate care. The parent trees pictured have never been pruned but still naturally they have grown in a desirable shape. Please see full description for further details. π Thank you. βΊοΈRead below for all your questions answered about this staple Southern tree.Flowers and Foliage:Glorious huge white blossoms up to 10 inches across crown the magnolia's glossy, green leaves. The broad and bright green foliage provide beautiful landscapes. These trees are perfect for areas where you would like to provide shade for your yard as they grow quickly. Fertilizer is not needed but of course would help considerably if you want to get your tree bigger faster. With magnolias in bloom their lovely fragrance can be noticed up to 25 feet away. This tree is called "sweet magnolia" for this reason as the scent is absolutely wonderful and lusciously luxurious to behold.Growth:The average tree matures anywhere from 60- to 80-feet tall and 40 feet wide after many years. That's BIG. Fortunately, home gardeners can plant more compact selections that won't swallow entire an entire yard. They include 'Teddy Bear' (16- to 20-feet tall, 10- to 12-feet wide), 'Brackens Brown Beauty' (35 feet tall, 15 feet wide), 'Little Gem' (20- to 25-feet tall, 10- to 15-feet wide), and 'Majestic Beauty' (35- to 50-feet tall, 20 feet wide).Where to grow:It thrives in USDA Zones 6 to 10. It likes acidic to slightly alkaline, well-drained soil, and full to partial sun. It also tolerates salt spray, so it's a good candidate for beach gardens.Pruning:These trees seem to require little shaping and add you can see in my pictures of the parent tree, it's shapely even though it's never been pruned. But if you would like you can use hand pruners to do the work, shortening branches to the point where they join with another branch, so as to not leave obvious holes in the canopy. You can prune in spring, summer, late fall, or winter. Keep in mind that if you completely remove the lowest branches of a big tree, they probably won't be replaced.
