But the anonymity and simplicity of the stealthy torpedo attack hid the savagery of warfarea stark difference from the brutality of the surface gun maneuver. Relying on surprise and speed, the submarine punched through to the surface while sailors scrambled through the hatches to reach their guns and ammunition lockers, and a crack team aimed to fire the first shots within twenty seconds of surfacing. Surface and Destroy: The Submarine Gun War in the Pacific reveals the nature of submarin warfare in World War II and investigates the challenges of facing the enemy on the surface. While well-documented underwater attacks are acknowledged as the key to the success of submarines in the Pacific, the role of surface gun attacks is often overlooked. Michael Sturma amends the historiography of the war in the Pacific, taking into account the distinct hardships endured by submariners who fought surface battles. By shifting the focus from remote torpedo attacks to close-range surface gun battles, Sturma raises vital new questions and brings submariners' attitudes and relationships with enemy sailors and civilians into sharper relief. Although face-to-face encounters intensified the brutality of combat, they also forced the combatants to acknowledge targets of flesh and blood rather than steel, sometimes provoking acts of mercy that would not otherwise have been possible. Surface actions were more likely to bring submariners into contact with survivors, whose personal stories rarely find their way into narratives of war. Sturma explores the sailors' moral standards and their ability to wage total war. Surface and Destroy analyzes the World War II submariner experience and the effects of surface attacks on the war in the Pacific, offering a compelling study of the battles that became, in the words of one sailor, "intolerably personal."
