In 1991, the Sukhoi Design Bureau began designing an aircraft for training sports pilots. Due to the fact that the aircraft was designed in a two-seat version, this could reduce the pilot training time and training costs.The aircraft was ready a year after the start of design. This became possible because most of the systems and assemblies were used from the Su-26 sports aircraft. Main differences: one more cockpit was added, wingspan and fuselage length were increased. Composite materials make up 60% of the entire aircraft structure. The Su-29 has become heavier than the Su-26 by 60 kg. The aircraft can be controlled by one pilot, while the machine corresponds to the flight characteristics of the Su-26.In 1991, the construction of two prototypes of the aircraft began, which were intended for flight tests. In addition, two more prototypes were built - for statistical tests. At the end of 1991, the first experimental flights of the Su-29 prototype were carried out, and already in May 1992, the first production aircraft was flown. The aircraft received its first sports experience in 1992 at the World Olympics in France, where it was noted by experts as a very good and promising model. Almost immediately after these competitions, the manufacturer received an order from the United States for the supply of 12 aircraft. In total, about 50 aircraft were delivered to other countries of the world. In 1994, an experimental Su-29KS was created, which was equipped with SKS-94 ejection seats, developed by the Zvezda association. The serial modification of this aircraft with these seats was designated Su-29M. In total, more than 60 Su-29 aircraft were produced; at present, the production of aircraft of this type has been discontinued. They are operated in Russia, Australia, Great Britain, USA, South Africa and other countries as training aircraft. In 1997, the Argentine Air Force decided to purchase seven Su-29 aircraft to improve the training of pilots.
