He studied at the National Academy of Design and the Art Students League. In 1929, at the age of 19, he became the youngest artist to be included in an international exhibition of modern paintings at the Carnegie Institute in Pittsburgh. Van Veen was a contributor to the Nation and New Masses magazines and a WPA muralist. He created allegorical and other social realist-style murals in courthouses and other public buildings around the United States.
