At DC, these concepts would be famously incorporated and explored more in-depth in the mid-1980's industry-changing maxi-series, Crisis on Infinite Earths. But the exact term for this space between Multiversal worlds (or Universes) became known as THE BLEED thanks to creators Warren Ellis and Bryan Hitch, who introduced the concept in the pages of the Image Comics / WildStorm series Stormwatch (Vol 2) and who would fully flesh out the realm in The Authority (Vol 1, 1999) after WildStorm Comics was brought under the DC Comics umbrella. In The Authority, one of the few super-teams with the technology to traverse the region thanks to their "Bleedship," The Bleed is an unforgiving, swirling red-hued maelstrom and is more clearly defined as "an interdimensional space acting both as a barrier and as a pathway between multi-versal worlds." More recently, Marvel Comics has officially "borrowed" The Bleed for their own use by incorporating its existence into the pages of Avengers Forever (Vol 1, 2021). By doing so, Marvel has positioned the Marvel Multiversal as tangential to the greater DC Universe. Stormwatch #7 begins Ellis and Hitch's exploration of THE BLEED with the first chapter in their three-issue story-arc "BLEED" Part One.
