Description: Perfect for serving cranberry sauce over the holidays. This beautiful spoon is in incredible condition for its age and is clearly marked AB GB, a mark used for Alice Burrows and her husband, London silversmith, George Burrows. It has a raspberry and pineapple repousse design and they came from an estate that had a few other similar so "Alice Burrows was married to London silversmith George Burrows who died in 1801. She then continued to trade in partnership with her son George (2nd) Burrows until her death in 1827. The London Goldsmiths Company as well as a number of other guilds did allow young women to be indentured as apprentices, but that was always a very small proportion. It was a little more common, especially in the second half of the 18th century for widows, as heads of households, to take over their husbands businesses, such as Hester Bateman and her daughter-in-law Anne. After Alice's death George (2nd) continued the business but under his own makers mark without reference to his mother. It is relatively unlikely that Alice actually made much of the silver herself (there are no records of her ever having been apprenticed) but she would certainly have managed the finances and she had a seat in the Goldsmith's Company grand court, although whether she could vote is I think, unknown."
