Over the last six decades, Stanwell has established itself as both a leader in innovative Danish design and for producing well-priced pipes with precision construction and engineering. Many of its designs were created for the company by iconic pipe-makers in the Scandinavian scene, such as Sixten Ivarsson, Anne Julie, Jess Chonowitsch, and Tom Eltang. Danish for silk brown, Stanwells Silke Brun line features smooth finishes with a softer, more reserved color palette than some of the makes other pipes. In a similar vein, this shape 51 billiard might seem a little more traditional than the avant-garde designs that post-war Danish makes, like Stanwell, are known for. But heres the thing about that—the 51 is actually one of Stanwells oldest shapes, appearing all the way back in catalogs from the early 1950s, back before Stanwells trademark S stem logo had its crown. It has also featured consistently in Stanwells catalog in the decades since, amidst the periodic culling of scores of other shapes. I guess even in Denmark you cant beat the classics. -J.M.
