About the Book:In Nauvoo, the Prophet Joseph Smith reflected on the course of the Restoration and paid tribute to Joseph Knight's family, who had stood by him loyally. "They are my friends," he wrote. Regarded by many as the "second family of the Restoration," the Knight family participated in many of the events of the early Church. Joseph Smith used Brother Knight's wagon to retrieve the plates from the hill Cumorah, and the family was in the first group the Prophet sent to settle Jackson County, Missouri. The Knights endured and stayed faithful throughout their many trials and moved west with the Saints to settle the Salt Lake Valley. William G. Hartley, a highly regarded historian, has carefully researched a multitude of sources and woven a story that is both readable and reliable. This book illustrates the faithfulness of the Joseph Knight family and bears stirring testimony of the prophetic calling of Joseph Smith. Some Book Reviews:5/5 stars - History of LDS Saints Through Eyes of Early Everyday Members -- the KnightsIf you are looking for a book that will personalize and make the history of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints come alive, this is the one. The Knight family was part of the history before The Book of Mormon had been completely translated, before the Church was officially organized. The Knights were friends of Joseph Smith and stood by him till his martyrdom. Yet, they were not just committed to Joseph Smith. Because they believed that prophets again walked among men, they weathered the storms of persecution in Missouri and in Illinois, then followed Brigham Young to help settle the Rocky Mountain West. Though they were down-to-earth and human like the rest of us, they were quite extraordinary in that they gave heart, might, mind, and soul to the Lord and his servants. Author William Hartley has done a superb job in portraying how the Joseph Knight family truly stood by the Lord's servant Joseph. This is a wonderful book to read at the same time that you read the Doctrine and Covenants because it introduces you to the people who lived the history. Well worth the read!--Jan C. Myers 5/5 stars - Stand by my servant JosephStand by my servant Joseph is a well written view of the history of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints from the view of real people who recorded their history and their feelings during the good and bad times of the early church. I had a special interest in reading the history of Joseph Knight because of the connection between his family and mine. I found the story of the conversion of John Harris as a part of the Knight Family story. I was aware of this story, but it was interesting to see it printed in the book. There is a misplacement of the dates and place of the baptism based on John Harris' personal journal, but otherwise tells the story well.As I read the book, the story of the Knight family and the history of the treatment of the church members became the focal point. I found the author's writing to be excellent. It definitely maintains interest. I enjoyed the book immensely because of the insight into the effect the elements of the history had on real people. The faithful example shown by the members of this family is an inspiration to all of us. The story of my personal great, great grandfather, while interesting, became secondary to the real story told by the book. I recommend it highly to those who are interested in knowing how the early members reacted to persecutions.--Michael Henry Copyright © 2018-2023 TDM Inc.
