Description: Staffordshire Compton Verney Plate It is one of 80 views in the series with the largest number of patterns, Wood's Grapevine Border series. Most of the patterns were taken from John Preston Neale's "Seats of Noblemen and Gentlemen in England and Wales, Scotland and Ireland" published in 1818 & 1829. An estate near the Saxon village of Compton was acquired by the ruthless and ambitious Richard Verney in 1435 and given the name Compton Verney. He erected a great house which has subsequently been enlarged and rebuilt by succeeding generations. In 1762-1768 John Verney, 14th Baron Willoughby de Broke (known as 'The Good Lord Willoughby'),employed Robert Adam to undertake the major remodelling of the house, and Capability Brown to landscape the 120 acres of gardens that remain today. The mansion houses a notable collection of fine art and is now open to the public. Incised "Enoch Wood & Sons. Printed Cartouche. Approx. 8.25"W. Circa 1830. Provenance: Flora Rabinovitch Collection Documentation: TCC #2393 Condition: Knife marks, flaw to front, otherwise minor imperfections to be expected.
