Description: Red Aesthetic Transferware Childs Creamer Milk Jug WATER HEN Charles Allerton & Sons Staffordshire, England c.1890 This child's transferware cream pitcher or milk jug circa 1890 was originally part of an early child's or doll house play tea set. The color is rich cherry red against a creamy white earthenware. The little octagonal pitcher stands 3 inches tall. It features a water hen or Guinea Hen (the English name for the American Coot ) feeding in a lily pond with cat tails and reeds. The image wraps around the perimeter of the jug. The background is an aesthetic composition of lush flowers, swallows, and an inset of a castle. There is a zig zag patterned trim along the rim. This pattern is pictured and discussed in Lorraine Punchard's Playtime Porcelain and Pottery as well as Petra Williams' Romantic Staffordshire. The piece is unmarked. The pattern name is WATER HEN and registration number 754. Maker was Charles Allerton and Sons, a pottery manufacturer in the Staffordshire region of England who was well known for his whimsical children's tea sets. Great condition with no chips cracks or repairs. The workmanship is haphazard, which is one of the reasons many people collect Allerton’s tea wares...not fine china, and not meant to be; it was made for children and dolls and probably considered disposable. The transfers are not always aligned neatly, and there is runny glaze and little bumps and dips and transfer wrinkles and glazed over edge crizzling original to the making. The naïve and hasty style adds to the folksy charm. The little set in a fine example of AAFA wares from childhood more than 125 years ago. Children's red aesthetic transferware in this desirable pattern are scarce. The pitcher will enhance any collection of children's wares or aesthetic transferware. We have also listed other early children's and miniature transferware tea and table wares, and have other patterns available in stock in red, blue and brown that we would be happy to make available for sale upon request.
