Easily one of the most iconic flight jackets ever worn, the Type A-2 flying jacket has become as legendary as the U.S. Army Air Force Pilots and aircrew who wore them during World War II. The A-2’s origins go back many years before the war even began when it was introduced in 1931 as the replacement to the A-1 flight jacket previously worn by aviators during the 1920s. The A-2 was produced in large quantities through 1943 and would become prized possessions for pilots and aircrew who wore them even after the war was long over. This military-issue type jacket was designed and approved by the U.S. Air Force and made in the United States. The jacket shell is made of premium hand-stitched Horsehide. The jacket features dual knit cuffs and waist band along with a nylon interior lining. In addition, the jacket has a U.S. Air Force-regulation snap down leather lined collar, shoulder epaulets, two snap down pockets, a full-length brass zippered opening with integrated wind flap, a metal hook under the collar to fasten the top of the opening, and dark colored brass grommets under each armpit for ventilation.
