Description: Huge original antique print from an 1880s illustrated journal. It depicts a racewalking competition in New York City, referred to as a Pedestrian Race back then (Pedestrianism). On the back is a 4-inch article about the race. It was held indoors in Madison Square Garen, New York City. The race was held over six days, with 48 contestants. The first day required 100 miles to be covered. Only half achieved this. The article was written part way wthough the race, when over 400 miles were travelled and 600 was expected. The picture was made after the article and shows that Mr. J. Albert was the winner traveling 621 miles. In fifth place was an early leader, Frank Hart, a black man who completed 546 miles. The print is very large (folio size), measuring approximately 11 x 16 inches (28 x 40.5 cm). The picture fills most of the page, with a caption below.The page is in excellent condition for its age.
