They have been collected in his new book, An Artist's Creel, a comprehensive view of his approach to art and career accomplishments. Of his work, he has said: "My paintings are done on four or five levels. They tell a story, and I'm always trying to work the light to the dark and the dark to the light, trying to draw the viewer into the painting. I try for asymmetrical balance, so the re isn't something sitting in the center of the canvas. "The landscape is important to me: Having that perspective, being able to paint the whole landscape and the n put a figure into it, I'm able to set up some tensions, some dynamics, by the placement of the figure. When I do a hunting or fishing painting, my goal is always to capture the essence of the experience. It may not be exactly as it happened, but it is faithful to the way it is remembered." Although known for his hunting and fishing scenes, including the fine-art prints published by his Shooter's Hill Press, Corbin's early achievements in art were sculptures including jewel-like creations. He also does portraits - but likes to them to reflect his subjects' love of the place they have created or the sport they have chosen. An action portrait such as Bobby Orr, which is in the National Art Museum of Sport, may be an atypical painting for Peter Corbin, but it certainly is in a setting chosen by Orr. Bobby Orr was spotted as a potential hockey standout by the Boston Bruins when he was still a 14-year-old in Parry Sound, Ontario. At 18, he joined the Bruins and in 1970 won the team its first Stanley Cup in 29 years. He revolutionized the sport with his scoring ability and playmaking at the blue line. He ended his career with the Chicago Black Hawks, battling the results of a long-time knee injury. He retired at age 30 in 1978 and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1979. Peter Corbin paints in the loft of a barn on his Millbrook, New York, property. He is a graduate of Wesleyan University and studied at the California College of Arts and Crafts.
