Measures approx. 4” x 3”. In aluminum with gold-colored finish. The upper half features a modernistic design in crisscrossing lines suggestive of fast busy tempo of a large city. A horizontal double-lined field breaks this busy pattern, featuring the name of the Soviet capital city in Russian, English, French and German. Accidentally or by design, the letter “M” in each 4 words resembles the “M” emblem of the Moscow Metro (“Метро”) subway. The case was made clearly with foreign tourists as the target group, so it makes sense to presume that it was manufactured around 1980, the year of the Moscow Summer Olympic Games. The case was manufactured by the Mosshtamp Factory (“завод Мосштамп”), one of the oldest and largest factories in Russia in the business of producing souvenirs, badges, keyrings, commemorative medals, tags and a wide variety of similar items, mostly in metal. The history of “Mosshtamp” goes back to 1864 when two merchants of German descent founded a cotton fabric dying factory which soon was re-profiled to manufacture small metallic items such as buttons, badges, uniform insignia, etc. In very good condition. The gold finish is mostly intact, showing just minor loss to the upper half. The artwork is in slightly raised relief and shows almost no wear even to the high points. In the lower right-hand corner, the gold finish shows more wear than elsewhere, likely due to the owner’s moving the case into and out of the pocket it was kept in the same habitual manner.
