Description: SOUTH AFTER GETTYSBURG LETTERS OF CORNELIA HANCOCK 1863-1868 EDITED BY HENRIETTA STRATTON JAQUETTE FOREWORD BY BRUCE CATTON FINE CONDITION FINE CONDITION DUST JACKET PROTECTED IN A CLEAR, BRODART COVER PRINTED BY THOMAS Y. CROWELL COMPANY IN 1956 One day in the summer of 1863 a slight, pretty girl of twenty-three walked out of her comfortable Quaker home in southern New Jersey and, from then on, saw more of the Civil War than any other woman of her time. As Cornelia Hancock says in one of her letters home, “I was the first woman to who reached the Second Corps after the three-day fight. I feel assured I shall never feel horrified at anything that may happen to me hereafter.” Setting up hospitals, rallying morale, giving first aid, cadging supplies, she went on from Gettysburg – the Battle of the Wilderness, White house, Sheridan’s raids, the capture of Richmond. Many famous Union figures were her friends – although she did not approve of “the drunkenness of our Major Generals” – and there is even a thread of romance with a brilliant doctor. This is a collection of the Civil War letters of Miss. Hancock as well as her letters following the war when she established a school for blacks in South Carolina. Hancock’s letters are a combination of humor, sympathy, and shrewdness and through them we get a rare picture of the post war South as well. Her fight to set up schools for the freedmen is especially interesting in view of today’s antisegregation disputes. To quote her opinion, expressed nearly 160 years ago, “any laws that are to benefit a few should be discontinued in the American land.” Cornelia Hancock is revealed through her letters as a rare being, a strong feminist, and a strongly feminine. That she was at the center of the epochal events adds value to a book which is a sheer delight to read. THIS BOOK IS IN FINE CONDITION This antique book is in excellent condition.
