Ryan Lott, better known by his stage name Son Lux, is a post-rock and alternative hip hop musician based in New York City, New York. Son Lux released his debut album, At War with Walls & Mazes, on Anticon in 2008. His second album, We Are Rising, was released on Anticon in 2011. It was recorded in 28 days for the RPM Challenge. He is a member of S / S / S along with Serengeti and Sufjan Stevens. The trio released their debut EP, Beak & Claw, on Anticon in 2012. Son Lux developed the orchestrations and instrument design for the film Looper. Son Lux’s debut recording, At War With Walls and Mazes (Anticon), earned him the title of "Best New Artist" by NPR's All Songs Considered. For his contribution to the flexi disc series, Son Lux (aka Ryan Lott) offers the cryptic “Black Waters”. A cover song, originally written by 90-year old dulcimerist Jean Ritchie, “Black Waters” is a dark, meditative interpretation of traditional Appalachian folk. What is a Flexi Disc? In case you are unfamiliar, a Flexi Disc is basically a thin, single-sided vinyl record which is flexible (hence the name), and rather obscure. However it is playable on any standard turntable. Back in the day flexis were often packaged inside magazines and even in cereal boxes. In the late 60s, The Beatles even used to send special Christmas flexi discs to their fan club. The Joyful Noise 2013 Flexi Disc Series features different artists each month for the duration of the year. All of the releases are strictly limited to 1000 copies on single-sided clear flexi discs. Digital will NOT be made available. That's right, these songs will only be available on these 1000 physical units.
