Description: Sketches from a Tour Through Holland & Germany by J. P. Mahaffy and J. E. Rogers. Published in 1889 by Macmillan & Co. "All modern travellers may be regarded as followers of a great but unintelligible man, the philosopher Hegel. Did we say great but unintelligible? We should have said great though unintelligible. Or rather great because he was unintelligible. For it seems the glory of the nineteenth century to have discovered that even the enjoyment of beauty must not be obvious; there must be obscurities and complications in anything that is truly beautiful "in and for itself." " A blue hardback with gold decoration and text on the cover and spine. Some staining to the boards, the spine is sun faded and has shelf wear, and the corners are scuffed. Inside 271 pages of text with many illustrations within, followed by 2 pages of advertisements from the publisher. Some discolouration to the edge of the text block but the pages within are generally in clean condition. There is a stamp on the title page stating "with the publishers compliments" and the final advertisement page has a pencil mark. Page vii of the preface has a piece missing at the bottom of the page as photographed. Size approximately 15cm x 21cm. UK bidders only please.
