[DUST JACKET]"Little is known at present of the life and work of Sir Richard Roos of Belvoir. This biography presents in him a notable figure of the fifteenth century. As a soldier, a 'Gloucester's man', and a King's Knight, he was in touch with the noted men of the mid-century and his family was connected by marriage with Richard, Earl of Warwick, the great Talbot, Edmund, Duke of Somerset, and Sir Richard Vernon of Haddon Hall. He was also a skilled poet and translator, writing for the Lancastrian party, and especially for his kinswoman, Eleanor Cobham, and for Queen Margaret of Anjou, and their circles. As a poet of Courtly Love, familiar with the usage and devices of the French poets, he revived for the young queen the cult of the Flower and the Leaf. As a translator, known to us already for the English version of Chartier's La Belle Dame sans Merci, he is claimed here for The Romaunt of the Rose, generally attributed to Chaucer. His life spans most of the century from Henry V to Edward IV, and his poems reflect or satirise the life of the courts of Humphrey, Duke of Gloucester, and of Henry VI." #SirRichardRoos #Poetry #Books #Bookworm #BooksBooksBooks #bibliophile #RupertHartDavis #EnglishPoet #Lancaster #instaread #bookcollecting #CuttleboneBooks #Belvoir #EthelSeaton #booksale #QueenMargaret #HartDavis #CoverArt #Bookstagram #booksforsale #instabooks #Antiquarian #BooksBooksBooks #readersofinstagram #collectiblebooks #Vintage
