Description: • For Your Consideration: • A SIGNED* First Edition, First Printing in HARDCOVER of: • “WHERE THE MUSIC WAS: FIFTEEN STORIES”(Harcourt, Brace & World, 1965) (Hardcover, First Edition, First Printing) • BY CHARLES EAST • SIGNING NOTE: Signed & Inscribed by the author CHARLES EAST in black ink on the front free endpaper as follows: “To Katherine and Everett, With all good wishes, CHARLES EAST.” • ABOUT THIS TITLE: • “EAST writes understated stories about the changing life in flyspeck towns in the Deep South. Shifts in population and changes in racial attitudes leave genteel, aging characters complaining that the town no longer feels like home. EAST mixes a nostalgia for the passing of a gracious way of life with an awareness of the limits a small town imposes.”—CHARLES SOLOMON, LOS ANGELES TIMES • “EAST’s last short-story collection, WHERE THE MUSIC WAS, was published in 1965. After reading this exceptional new volume [DISTANT STRANGES AND INTIMATE FRIENDS, 1996] readers will be sorry he waited so long to publish another. Each and every one of the 14 pieces gathered here brims with unflinching honesty, insight and heart. Almost uncomfortably realistic, they draw you immediately inside characters whose lives are painfully slipping through their fingers.”—PUBLISHERS WEEKLY • ABOUT THE AUTHOR: • “CHARLES EAST was born in Shelby, Mississippi, on December 11, 1924, rasied in Cleveland, Mississippi, and educated at Louisiana State University, where he received his B.A. and M.A. degrees. During World War II he served in the U.S. Navy for two years. MR. EAST is assistant director and editor of the Louisiana State University Press, where he has been a member of the staff since 1962. Before that he held editorial jobs on COLLIER’S magazine, BATON ROUGE MORNING ADVOCATE, and the BATON ROUGE STATE-TIMES. His stories have been published in MADEMOISELLE, THE YALE REVIEW, THE VIRGINIA QUARTERLY REVIEW, and THE ANTIOCH REVIEW.”—THE PUBLISHER • • For other details about this book, please see below. • TITLE: “WHERE THE MUSIC WAS: Fifteen Stories” AUTHOR: CHARLES EAST TYPE: HARDCOVER PUBLISHER, LOCALE, & YEAR: Harcourt, Brace & World (New York), 1965 EDITION: First Edition, First Printing* *RE: On the Copyright Page, the statement “First Edition”—with no later printings listed.
