Photographs and text by Philip Jones 223 pp. Heartwarmingly INSCRIBED and SIGNED by Griffiths friends from North and South Wales: "This book is being signed during a marvellous reunion of the North and South Walians held in the neutral territory of Greenwich in July '79, with love to you all-- Philip". In addition, there is a short letter from Griffiths on his own letter headed paper addressed to Peter Jones, a noted English photojournalist from Swansea, Wales (see below): "Called about 11 pm---I'm in Swansea area for the day---are you working ?-- I 'll call again tomorrow morning - Philip ". BOOK CONDITION: Very Good; a solid, clean copy with light wear to cover edges and corners, slight lean to spine and reading crease along spine (but cosmetic with binding still solid and firm). SIGNED.The book must have come in the possession of Peter N. Jones , of 31 Penmaen terrace Swansea Glamorgan (Wales) while working for Photography magazine of London who was a staff photographer for the Guardian, 1965-1981. Born in Swansea, Peter Johns trained as an art teacher and illustrator at the city's art college. He started work in the 1950s as illustrator, and later photographer, for the South Wales Evening Post and Herald of Wales. A series of photographs of Welsh miners brought his work the attention of both The Observer and The Guardian newspapers. He relocated to London as a full-time freelance photographer in 1961 and became a staff photographer for the Guardian in October 1965. He retired from the Guardian in 1981. Johns shot for various publications and was part of a new wave of British photojournalists. After leaving the newspaper, he relocated to Portugal where he set up his 'Photography Workshops Maritenda' and a restaurant and gallery space to sell his work in, before later retiring to Hastings.
