Description: “THE NEW FRONTIER”, 1961 SIGNED ORIGINAL COLOR MONOPRINT BY THE AMERICAN ARTIST AND PRINTMAKER LOUIS MONZA (1897-1984) This wonderful naïve style color monoprint of two figures sitting on top of an elephant, a female nude and a man wearing a suit and top hat, is by the California artist Louis Monza. The monoprint is signed and dated in pencil by the artist in the margin below the image lower right: L. Monza 61, titled in pencil in the margin below the image lower left: “The New Frontier”, and numbered in pencil in the margin below the image center: (3). The monoprint is also titled and numbered in pencil in the margin lower left corner: “The New Frontier” - 3/3. This is a scarce print by the artist. The image, printed on rice paper, measures 6 5/8 x 7 inches. The full sheet with margins measures 8 1/8 x 9 5/8 inches. The monoprint comes unframed. PLEASE NOTE CONDITION: There are two mild vertical crease lines in the top margin (caused in the printing process), and the verso has a small paper hinge remnant in the upper left corner tip, otherwise the monoprint is in excellent condition, a crisp clean impression, with no evidence of any damage to the image.Louis Monza, a self-taught painter, sculptor and printmaker, was born in Turate, Italy in 1897. At the age of seven, he was apprenticed to a wood carver and folk artisan. In 1913 he immigrated to the United States and in 1917 he was inducted into the army and served in World War I. Following the war he supported himself as a house painter until 1937, when he was injured in a fall. During his lengthy convalescence he began to create art, a path from which he did not deviate for the remainder of his life. Monza moved to California in 1946 where he created prints and sculpture as well as drawings and paintings. He participated in many group exhibitions in New York and California. In 1973, the book by Catharine Fels entitled “The Graphic Work of Louis Monza”, featured a catalogue of his graphic work through 1971, with an essay by the author on the sources of the symbolism in Monza’s prints. His work is in several permanent collections including the Oakland Museum of California and the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of American Art. _______________________________ ATTENTION!
