Hoag in 1956. This fascinating long, narrow horizontal print depicts abstract tribal figures in red, gold, and white on a black background. The work is signed and dated by the artist (Hoag '56). Condition: Good. Some yellowing and imperfections on the margins consistent with age as well as a few pin holes and tape remnants from previous matting. Note: Photo shown with mat for display only. Print comes unmatted. The Artist: Peter K. Hoag (1929-2009) earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from Bard College, New York, NY, in 1953 and a Master of Fine Arts Degree from Cranbrook Academy of Art, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, in 1954. His works have been compared to the style of famous print artist Irving Amen. Known locally in his hometown, Lancaster, PA, as a fine artist, Peter's woodblock prints have been exhibited in galleries and art societies in several cities, including Lancaster, PA, Rochester, NY, and New York City winning a number of awards. A piece entitled “The Cry” from the 1950s is maintained in collections at the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the University of Michigan Museum of Art. Peter’s early woodblock prints from the 1950s feature bold, abstract shapes and colors. His style evolved over the years to include intricate patterns and shapes such as faces, landscapes, animals and cityscapes with themes inspired by his travels throughout the world. Dedicated to his art, Peter spent countless hours drawing the designs, transferring them to the woodblocks, and carving the designs into the wood. He then hand rolled the ink onto the block and hand pressed the paper to the block, often using multiple carved woodblocks, one for each color, to create each unique finished print.
