Biography: Michael Bowen was born in Beverly Hills, California on December 8, 1937. His work as an artist spans five decades. Bowen has been progressively documented in exhibitions, reviews, art periodicals, and in the media worldwide. He has exhibited extensively in the United States and abroad. His work has a large following, and is housed by groups of private collectors and museums. Michael Bowen was a transformative American painter steeped in the counterculture of the 1960s. Bowen's technique melds psychedelic abstraction with poignant figuration, capturing societal tumult with a visceral intensity. His canvases are emotional battlegrounds where vibrant colors clash and harmonize, embodying the spirit of rebellion and the quest for peace. He was an American fine artist known as one of the co-founders of the late 20th and 21st century Visionary artmovements. His works include paintings on canvas and paper, 92 intaglio etchings based on Jungian psychology, assemblage, bronze sculpture, collage, and handmade art books. He remains influential among avant-garde art circles around the world. Bowen, who had lived in diverse spiritual power points around the world, had been involved in key art scenes that have turned the static academia upside down. His range of style represents reflections of culture and energy that he has experienced and placed on canvas. In the late 50s and early 60s, Bowen continued his spiritual training and research. He investigated and practiced a variety of occult topics, Eastern philosophies, and mysticism, and his artwork reflected these themes. Bowen is often referred to as a mystic artist. As a lifelong student of the Bhagavad-Gita, Bowen's entire career has emulated the spiritual warrior archetype of Arjuna, fighting for the Bill of Rights of the United States Constitution. Bowen's singer friend, Janis Joplin was a frequent guest at the Princeton Abalone studio. In 1966 Bowen co-founded the underground alt-weekly San Francisco Oracle with poet Allen Cohen and other local artists. He is also credited with bringing 200 pounds of flowers to the October 1967 Vietnam War protest at the Pentagon, which led to Bernie Boston’s Pulitzer Prize–nominated photograph, Flower Power, of a protestor fitting a flower into the barrel of a gun. Michael Bowen was an icon of the American Beat Generation and the 1960's counterculture. Bowen instigated some of the best-known public spectacles of the sixties, including the 1966 Love Pageant Rally and the 1967 Human Be-In. Bowen is also known for his role in inspiring and organizing the first Human Be-in in San Francisco. The artist is no longer living.
