Description: This 1989 first edition copy of Northwest Originals: Oregon Women and Their Art edited by Ellen Nichols is an actual dream find, totally one-of-a-kind and impossible to reproduce! Within this book is a collection of 24 signatures including the editor Ellen Nichols and 23 Oregon artists. Most have simply left a signature though a few have left a short inscription as well. There is also a gifting inscription from a 'Maura' giving the book to her mother but I can find no affiliation between 'Maura' and any of the artists or team who produced the book nor do I know if she or her mother went through the work of collecting the signatures. I have included photographs of a few of the signatures, however there are too many to show in photo, but I have provided a list below of all included signatories. The female artists whose signatures have been collected in this book are:- Ellen Nichols, editor- Susan Comerford, print maker- Ronna Neuenschwander, sculptor- Marlene Alexander, watercolor painter- Deborah DeWit, photographer- Julane Stites, dancer, choreographer- Judith Poxson Fawkes, weaver- Doris Helen Nelson, enamel jeweler- Barbara Drake, poet- Carol Sindell, violinist- Claudia Cave, graphite drawings & gouache painting- Martha Kay Renfroe, fiction author- Lucinda Parker, acrylic painter- Jean Auel, fiction author- Fernanda D'Agostino, mixed media installation artist- Dee Ford Potter, sculptor, weaver- Carol Riley, watercolor painter- Helen Issifu, watercolor painter- Elena Carter, ballet artist- Margaret Via, mixed media drawing- Sharon Whitney, playwright- Janice Scroggins, musical composition, arrangement & performer- Laura Ross-Paul, watercolor painter- Anne Storrs, ceramic tile maker The best description of the book comes from the Preface written by Ellen Nichols:"It has been a treat for those of us involved in the creation of this book to meet, interview and photograph the women featured here. Professional artists all, representing a broad spectrum of creative expression, they proffer their individual visions, their inner souls. Women, it often seems, regard their art more intimately than men, with a particularly female perspective. They often mention a creative spirituality, perceptions of common universal qualities. All talked of art as an integral part of their lives - as work they must do - inseparable from their social and personal experiences. Art is often the balance and harmony within their lives. The female experience of our culture is to nurture, to procreate, to persevere. Their attitude of caring - for environment, for society, for personal relationships - is the feminine nurturing experience. When one sees and hears those same experiences played out through a seemingly diverse selection of media, as these women have used them, one gathers a sense of their strengths. Women's strengths are founded in non-violence to person or place: neither aggressive nor militant, but nurturing and persevering. The selection was not easy. But with the help of numerous referrals and recommendations from arts organizations and guilds, regional and state arts councils, individual arts supporters, museums and retailers, these women have been chosen to share their ideas and personal philosophies, reflected in their work and through the integration of their personal and professional lives." In total there are 47 artists included in this work, you can find the full list in the photos. In terms of book condition this book is in great condition. The spine has wear along the edges but is still fully readable and the covers are pristine. There are no missing pages and the spine is stable & intact. This book is entirely one of a kind and has been priced to reflect that. If any family, the artist's themselves, or collectors who plan to make this part of a public collection like a museum or library wish to purchase this book please message me for a personalized offer (I will ask for some sort of proof of identification or affiliation).
