Description: This is a X Cash coin that was part of a boatload of copper coins struck in England and put aboard the India Merchantman to be used in India. The story of the Admiral Gardner is as interesting and tragic as many better known shipwrecks. The coin, salvaged from the bottom of the ocean, is encased in a case with a lengthy and informative text about the shipwreck. The ship left England and was swamped by a storm and sunk just after leaving for India. Like so many shipwrecks that have been found, it took a couple centuries to do so. I've researched shipwrecks before listing items and what surprised me, but shouldn't have in hindsight, is how very fiew shipwrecks have ever been discovered and of those that have, how many still hold most secrets about what happened to them. Naturally, when a ship was full of silver or gold, interest is locating it is just a tad higher than say one with no intrinsic value in tens of thousands of 200+ year old coppers....or a boatload of porcelain or just skeletons and no story to tell at all. There is so much under our oceans that it is amazing. I recall hearing recently about a lake that borders Seattle, a mile wide and 35 or so miles and all that is at the bottom of that landlocked lake, besides boats, a World War II airplane and a variety of other vessels. Imagine the millions of ships on the oceans for a couple thousand years that lie there deteriorating, holding stories if not treasure.
