Description: Shippensburg, Pennsylvania, Images of America, Paperback Founded in the 1730s, Shippensburg became a jumping-off point for waves of pioneer settlers heading west in the 19th century. This rush to the West created an atmosphere of entrepreneurialism for wagon makers, carpenters, furniture craftsman, and merchants to supply travelers as well as provide for the needs of the town's residents. It also attracted the Cumberland Valley Railroad and other railroads to extend their lines through the town. Shippensburg contains vintage photographs taken by both amateur and professional photographers, including the "Postcard King" Clyde Laughlin, from the 1880s and later. Included are photographs of soldiers, sailors, and Marines from the Civil War through Operation Desert Storm. Business and commercial activities are also represented, as are the town's historic buildings, such as schools and churches.
