The lighthouse owes its existence to navigational problems and the great storm of 1905 that caught many boaters unaware. "Split Rock Light" is an octagonal yellow-brick structure with a fifty-four foot tower. The cliff beneath drops 120 feet down to the lake surface. The focal plane of the light is 168 feet above lake level and makes "Split Rock" one of the loftiest lights of the Great Lakes.
