THE PAINTING IS OIL ON COPPER AS WAS THE CUSTOM FOR MANY OF THE EARLY DUTCH MINIATURE PORTRAITS. THE PORTRAIT DEPICTS A MAN WEARING BLACK WITH A WHITE LINEN COLLAR. THE MAN WITH EXTRAORDINARY DETAILS, FACE, AND COLLAR. THE MINIATURE IS 2 1/4 INCHES TALL AND 1 3/4 INCHES WIDE. A TRUE MASTERPIECE. Condition: Please see the photos for condition. There is some loss to the painting. Provenance: The estate of George Way. A collector since age 15, George Way’s interest quickly became a passion as he was drawn in to the golden age of Dutch culture. From a novice to connoisseur, his collection grew to become one of America’s foremost collections of Sixteenth–Seventeenth Century Dutch and English furniture, paintings and decorative objects. He wrote and lectured on Seventeenth Century Dutch antiques and furniture and was named one of the top 100 collectors in America by Art & Antiques Magazine for four years running, 1989–92. Pieces that belonged to George Way will go to museums including the New York State Museum and the Van Wagenen House. The painting is 2.25 inches (6 cm) by 1.75 inches (4.6 cm).
