Description: Reviews are mixed on this book but its always been one of my favorites. It's not as cohesive as Garp and it's not as melancholy as Hotel New Hampshire; it is two related stories, one of which is so-so but the other one is fantastic. The fantastic part is the wartime flashbacks of a, well, let's call him a wiseass German hippie. That half has really stuck with me for almost 40 years since I first read it and I wish there was more. The main body, about the 2 students, the girl and the zoo is okay. Nothing compelling. So if you start reading this and you find the main story isn't gripping you, I give you permission to fast forward to only the Wartime flashback sections, and I will be very surprised if you don't find them as fascinating as I did.
