Description: Set of two vintage 1930s small rectangular candy tins, made by Edward Sharp & Sons Ltd in Maidstone Kent, England. The first tin has a cute corgi-mix puppy next to a vintage blue telephone in a landscape view, while the other has a spaniel-pug mix (Cocker Pug maybe?) jumping out of a top hat or magician’s hat in a portrait view. The first puppy has the body shape of a corgi but not the face coloring or ears, and the second looks like a cocker spaniel puppy but has the squashed face and more wide-set eyes of a pug; however, as I am only a dog lover and not an expert, they may be different breeds altogether! The vintage telephone is of the Western Electric type with the pedestal, shallow cradle, extended mouthpiece on handheld, no dial, and period cord of the 1930s. The blue color would have been very rare for the time. The men’s top hat has the gorgeous shine of expensive black silk, and there are white gloves and another unrecognizable object, which doesn’t look like a cane or wand though that is what I would expect it to be give the hat. The bottoms of the tins are embossed with the company logo ‘Made in England by Edward Sharp and Sons Ltd of Maidstone, Kent’. These tins have some condition issues, the telephone puppy tin more so than the other, including scratches, scrapes, and a bit of surface rust. The top hat puppy tin has much more of the original glossy shine on the lid, but has some small dents in the upper left corner of the lid, and some rust inside. Since the design on the sides of both tins matches, the tins were most likely made within a few years of each other, but obviously the corgi puppy tin has had a rougher life. There is some darkening of the metal and loss of shine on the bottom and interior of both tins that is typical given their age. Please examine all pictures closely in order to fully assess for yourself the condition of these tins. Measurements of both tins are: length 5”/12.5cm, width 3.75”/9.5cm, height 1.25”/3cm, weight 3.5oz. These adorable puppy tins would make a great gift for vintage collectors who are also puppy lovers!
