Description: Vintage Historical Map Print Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE The Asia map depicted in this print is a section of a map that appeared in Mercator's 1578 printing of the Ptolemaic maps. --- Gerard Mercator prepared an edition of Ptolemy’s Geographia, as part of his plan to give a complete description of both ancient and modern maps. Mercator’s edition of Ptolemy became the standard text for this classical geographic work; it was based on the best available sources, and all the maps were re-edited and redrawn to conform to Ptolemy’s original design. --- Claudius Ptolemy (fl. AD 127-145) was an ancient geographer, astronomer, and mathematician. He is known today through translations and transcriptions of his work, but little is known about his life besides his residence in Alexandria, Egypt. Several of his works are still known today, although they have passed through several alterations and languages over the centuries. His geographic and cartographic work was immensely influential. In the Planisphaerium, Ptolemy discusses the stereographic projection. One of his best-known work is his Geographia, in eight books. The print for sale here depicts an ancient map from these volumes. In 1295, a Greek monk found a copy of Geographia in Constantinople; the emperor ordered a copy made and the Greek text began to circulate in eastern Europe. In 1393, a Byzantine diplomat brought a copy of the Geographia to Italy, where it was translated into Latin in 1406 and called the Cosmographia. The manuscript maps were first recorded in 1415. The vintage 1965 print offered here depicts a map section of one of Mercator's 1578 Ptolemy Geographia map NOTE: Any imperfections in this print are those that appear in the original map(s). Prior to this, virtually all prints (and engravings) were produced as illustrations to be included in a manuscript, book, newspaper, or pamphlet. Therefore, a vast majority of original prints have been over the years removed from these original sources. Prints are produced using many different techniques: relief printing (woodcut & wood engraving), intaglio printing (steel & copper plate engraving, drypoint, aquatint, etc), and planographic printing (lithography, serigraphy, inkjet, laser, etc.). While the commercial value of a print depends on such factors as age, rarity, and condition, the real value of a print is its tie to its history and/or its esthetic beauty.
