This was a well known exhibition that raised money for the war effort at the start of World War II. Bashka Paeff (1893-1979) was born in Russia and moved with family to the United States at the age of 1. She studied art and sculpture at an early age in Boston with luminaries such as Cyrus Edwin Dallin and Bela Pratt and became one of the leading female sculptors of the early 20th century. She was often referred to as the Subway Sculptor because she worked at Boston’s Park Street T station while studying with Pratt. Paeff is known today for the Marine Sailors and Soldiers Memorial on Route 1 crossing from Portsmouth, New Hampshire into Kittery, Maine and other works at the Boston Public Garden, Smithsonian Institution, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
