Note 2: You do not need pencil-sized scions to graft. Most of our scions are not pencil-sized, especially peaches and plums. One-year-old growth does not always reach pencil size. Pencil-sized scions are usually from two-year-old plants, which are less desirable for grafting. If you need pencil-sized scions, send us a message and we can verify before your order. Otherwise, you will get a mixture: some large, some small. But they will all graft just fine. Please do not leave negative feedback because the scions are not pencil-sized. Thank you. Each order is for one (1) scion cutting. Each cutting is about 5-6 inches long. There are enough buds in each scion that in most cases, you can cut it in half and have two grafts, depending on your skill level. Please note: You will only receive scions for grafting, not fruit for eating, and not tree for planting. We do not recommend trying to root our scions. Most of the time, they won't root. Rootstocks are cheap but you can also grow your own rootstock from seeds. Apples Ambrosia - Our newest addition, and one of our favorite apple to eat fresh! Ambrosia apple's flavor is best described as refreshing with floral notes and a pleasant crispy flesh. It is sweet with very little acidity. But it is not overly sweet, so it is healthier than other apples like Fuji. If you don't like sour apple, this is the apple for you! The patent on this apple just expired in 2017 so plants are still hard to find, or expensive. Persimmon - This variety is Fuyu. Appropriate rootstocks are seedlings of American persimmon (D. Virginia), Date Plum (D. Lotus), or strong existing persimmon trees. We also do not recommend rooting persimmon scions. Persimmons are harder to graft or root than other fruits. So rootstock compatibility is important. The Fuyu persimmon is a non-astringent variety that you can eat without waiting for it to get soft. Fuyu persimmon are ready for harvest when skins are deep orange, and unlike most other persimmon types, have no astringency and are ready to eat when still firm. Typically, this is around the end of October to early December. Their texture varies from crisp and succulent when young, to a tender and gelatinous texture as they mature. It is one of our favorite fruits to grow in the home orchard. Fuyu is self-fruitful and does not need a pollinator. If you have a pollinator nearby, like an American persimmon, then the Fuyu fruit will have more seeds. Otherwise, it is seed-free. Peach:Snow Beauty - a white peach that scores the highest in taste tests. Low acid, tantalizing sweet flavor. Large, full color, freestone. Self-fruitful, no pollinator needed. Appropriate rootstocks for peach are peach seedlings, nectarine, almond, plum seedlings or existing peach trees. Pear:D’Anjou Pear - One of the most popular and widely grown pears in the United States, the Green D’Anjou Pear Tree is an excellent and reliable variety. The skin on Green D’Anjou remains green as the fruit ripens rather than turning yellow. Tree is upright and the fruit ripens mid-season. Appropriate rootstocks for D’Anjou pear are quince (ultra dwarf- such as our parent tree), OHxF 513 (10-12ft tree), OHxF 87 Pear Rootstock (75% dwarfing - 13 ft ), etc. pear rootstock : OHxF 87 https://www.cumminsnursery.com/buy-trees/product-detail.php?type=rootstock&id=3304 Cherries - We recommend grafting cherries on cherry rootstocks only. We do not recommend grafting cherries on other rootstock (peach, plum, etc). The chance of successful fruiting is very low. We also do not recommend rooting cherry scions. Cherry Varieties: Bing CherryBing is the predominant variety available from California. Large with superb flavor and firm, juicy flesh. Taste is sweet, acidic with excellent flavor, juicy, firm and crunchy. Bing cherries ripens mid-season around late May–early June. Requires pollinators -- Rainer, Lapins, Black Tartarian, Brooks, or Early Burlat. Rainier CherryRipens just after Bing. A large, sweet cherry. Yellow with a red blush and light yellow flesh. The texture of the fruit is firm. Rainer is a cherry that tastes great right off the tree. Exquisitely flavored with high sugar levels, this is a premium niche variety that ripens just after Bing. Commands high prices in the supermarket. Lapins CherryLapins is a self-fertile cherry that has excellent quality fruit. It is resistant to cracking and looks similar to Bing. It is a good backyard cherry because you can plant just one tree. While Lapins is self-fertile, it also acts as a good pollinator for other sweet cherries. Ripens a week before Bing. One of our favorites. We like this variety more than Bing. Self-pollinating. Stella CherryStella cherry trees are stunning plants suited for small gardens, due to their small stature. Stella cherry trees are self-fertile, so you only need to plant one for an abundant crop. Sweet and productive. This tree bears plump, bold-red cherries similar to Bing. Grow abundant crops of heart-shaped fruit. Resists cracking and is moderately disease-resistant. Ripens in June. Self-pollinating. Q) Can these scions be rooted? A) These scions are for those who already have a root stock or fruit tree, and want to change the variety. We do not recommend rooting scions, as the chance of success is very low.
