Description: French absinthe era bar saucer with 2 franc 50 centime price and yellow rim and gold hairline decoration. This is a guaranteed genuine turn-of-the-century saucer or soucoupe from the Belle Epoque when poets and artists drank the addictive wormwood-based absinthe, which was banned in France in 1915. When you ordered, each drink was served on a priced saucer. The saucers were stacked by your place and when you were ready to pay l'addition (the bill), the barman or waiter simply added up the amounts on your saucers. On the back is a stamped mark indicating the manufacturer: J. Laplaine in Ste. Livrade a Lot, a commune in the Lot et Garonne departement which is about 125 kilometers southeast of Bordeaux. This saucer probably dates from 1900-1910. Condition is very good. Diameter is 4¾ inches. Genuine saucers are becoming very difficult to find. This one comes from a 25-year-old collection assembled by a frequent traveler to France. We have a sold a large number of absinthe related items on eBay over the past 26 years. These include dozens of saucers, spoons, glasses, topettes, sugar dishes, spoon holders — all genuine items from the period before absinthe was banned. We are sorry but we do not accept bids from buyers with no feedback or negative feedback unless cleared with us beforehand. Returns are accepted only if there is a substantial error in our description. If returned, item must be in the same condition as when shipped. Payment is expected within 2 days of sale. Item will be shipped as soon as possible after payment is received. Thank you for looking at our item. (B521) _gsrx_vers_1680 (GS 9.8.3 (1680))
