Description: Original 1926 pamphlet on the history of work in progress on Stone Mountain and the Confederate Memorial. It was published shortly after the firing of sculptor Gutzon Borglum, who'd been hired by the United Daughters of the Confederacy (U.D.C.) to carve a likeness of the Confederate High Command on the granite mountain east of Atlanta, for "neglect and virtual abandonment, inordinate demands for money not due him, offensive egotism, and delusions of grandeur." Borglum barely escaped arrest as he fled the state, never again to be involved with the Stone Mountain sculpture. After leaving Georgia, Borglum relocated to the Black Hills of South Dakota where he carved the Mount Rushmore National Memorial. This pamphlet picks up on the work in progress with the hiring of Borglum's successor, Henry Augustus Lukeman. It describes the planned design, with the colossal carved likenesses of President Davis, General Lee, and Stonewall Jackson, with notes on the difficulties of the work and estimations of the time and cost required for its completion. The pamphlet also mentions the minting of commemorative coins, the sale of which was projected to help defray some of the costs of carving. The coins were issued by the U.S. Government in 1925 as "Confederate Memorial Half Dollars." Condition: This pamphlet is in very good, lightly used condition, bright and clean, with two faint horizontal folds and no rips, tears, or writing.
