Description: 1824 Cuzco Peru 8 reales bearing the bust of Ferdinand VII. It bears the Assayer initial "T" for Tomas Panizo. What makes this coin so unusual is that it was issued after Peruvian Independence but with Colonial dies, since the newly opened Cuzco Mint did not yet have the Republican 8 reales dies with standing Liberty. Those arrived the following year. So this is the first true Republican issued 8 reales from the Cuzco Mint. Most examples of this coin are holed or badly worn. In VF30 condition, as certified by NGC, most of the details of the coin are still visible. The coin is very attractive for the grade. The weak center on the bust is a problem with the strike in general and even examples in much higher grades have a similar soft center.
