Description: S&C Electric Co. Power Fuse 1930’s. Historic 1930’s spring-loaded fuse filled with carbon tetrachloride, invented by Schweitzer and Conrad. Inc. In 1909, a blaze at Chicago's Fisk Street Generating Station, caused by poor circuit protection provoked Edmond O. Schweitzer and Nicholas J. Conrad to create this liquid power fuse to stop the electrical arcing that caused such frequent, terrible fires and power outages. This rare fuse is a historic Chicago artifact and symbol of engineering ingenuity that changed the world. “What makes this invention different than milestones by Tesla, Marconi, Edison, and Popov,” Kam said, “is that, try as we might, this is truly a landmark for us engineers; a breakthrough that, in all likelihood, we will not be able to share widely with the public. . . Schweitzer and Conrad [the S & C in S&C], who worked on a problem of great significance to public welfare, and whose inventions have enabled the safe and inexpensive supply of electricity for millions, are probably destined to be remembered only by us; the relatively few who are closer to their field of interest and who can appreciate fully the ingenuity and importance of their life’s work.”
