Description: Leather. Condition: Very Good. Hugh Thomson (illustrator). A stunningly bound copy of Hugh Thomson's illustrated edition of Our Village by Mary Mitford. The first Hugh Thomson edition, second impression. In a gorgeous full green polished calf binding by Sangorski and Sutcliff with incredible gilt detailing and the most delightful leaf pattern endpapers. Oh and they added a bookmark cord, still attached! At the end of the book, the original front and back covers and spine designed by illustrator Hugh Thomson are bound in, in exquisite condition. Profusely illustrated throughout by Hugh Thomson. Thomson was a renowned Victorian illustrator, best known for his pen and ink sketches of noted works from authors such as Jane Austen and Charles Dickens. Our Village is a charming collection of one hundred tales of rural life, first published during the 1820s and 1830s in The Lady's Magazine. Externally very smart with slight fading to the spine. Former owner’s bookplate inside. Internally firmly bound. Pages generally bright and clean with the odd bit of foxing. Some rebinds feel random, but Sangorski and Sutcliff did an extremely smart, wonderfully balanced job here. The gilt details are gorgeous, the endpapers sublime, and the entire effect is, in a word, charming.
