Description: Lot of 2 San Juan Capistrano Handicap Programs from 1965- 1966. Back in the early 60s the San Juan Capistrano was the top grass race at a mile and three quarters in the country. Many of the horses who ran in the Santa Anita Handicap would run back in the San Juan. George Royal was a Canadian horse who won the race back to back in 65 and 66. Johnny Longden rode George Royal in both of those races. But the race in 1966 stands out. Longden was 59 years old and not riding all that much. Most trainers were looking for someone a bit younger. But on this day with 70,000 fans at Santa Anita, Longden turned back the clock in his final ride. Winning a three horse finish against Plaque and Tom Cat. Longden was carried off into the sunset on the shoulders of his fellow riders with 6032 winners. At that time no one had ridden anything close to that number of winners. He would go on to win the 1969 Kentucky Derby with Majestic Prince as his trainer. These two programs are loaded with Hall Of Fame Horses, Trainers and Jockeys. Way to many to name.
