It was originally discovered in 1939 according to Mindat.com research reported on their website. In the 1950's most of the larger boulders and cobbles were mined out of the area. Today only smaller pebbles tumble out of Clear Creek in San Benito Co. California. The pieces sold by Velvet Underground are from an 89 lbs. boulder that was discovered at an Estate Rock Sale in the Coachella Valley. It was reported that the Jadeite boulder was in the Rock and Mineral Collection of 2 avid Rock Collectors from SoCal over the past 50+ years. Whereabouts prior to 1970's are unknown. The slab slices in various sizes sold in the Velvet Underground Shop have a beautiful Lapidary polish creating high end jewelry. Artistically the boulder was looked at and sliced to create an incredible Island Suiseki Landform Viewing Stone with waterfall feature. Suiseki is a Japanese name for naturally formed stones that have the power to and beauty to suggest a scene from nature or an object closely associated with nature. It is a extremely dense Jadeite with the Shamans mark of deep purple veins running through the Jadeite. This piece has two veins running along what looks like a fish mouth as if expelling into the sea. See photo number 7 above. The Jade in this position looks like a large fish from the sea with its mouth open. The mouth of the fish lays open and the purple veins can be seen.
