Description: Offered for sale from my personal collection, is an unusual, solid 14 karat yellow gold, flip ring, made by the Esemco Jewelry Company. I am not sure of the age of this ring but I believe it is pre 1950s. What makes this particular ring unusual are the two gemstones that were used in the "flip" design. Most of the flip rings I have seen are usually white gold and feature some form of cameo on one side, often paired with black onyx on the reverse. This ring features a beautiful and large, (about 16 x 12 mm) oval turquoise cabochon on one side and a faceted, high domed, large, (15 x 11.5 mm) pyrope or rhodolite garnet. The stone is dark red with a hint of purple so I am leaning toward rhodolite. Both stones are oval in shape and are securely bezel set. The turquoise cabochon is a beautiful blue color and weighs approximately 9.00 carats. The faceted rhodolite garnet appears red or blackish depending on the light and weighs about 10.00 carats. Remember there is no light coming in from beneath the stone, or from the sides, because the turquoise is set directly on the underside of it. The garnet has some minor abrasion to some of the facet lines upon close inspection and there are a few pinpricks due to normal wear. The stones flip by gently pushing down on one side of the stone facing up. The easiest way I found to do this is by pushing on the side with the eraser part of a pencil. Once the other stone starts to show, it is easy to push it down into place. The gold work on the mounting has a nuggety appearance. Th ring is fully hallmarked 14k and Esemco on the inside of the shank. The ring measures 24 mm wide, (north to south) by 19 mm across, (east to west, including the shoulders) and rises 12-14 mm above the finger, depending on which gemstone is facing up. The back of the shank tapers to 2.5 mm wide. The ring weighs a substantial 9.5 grams and is a size 5 3/4 on my metal mandrel. Sizing is possible by a professional jeweler. The overall condition is very good, with some minor surface scratches on the gold, commensurate with age and wear. There are a few dings on the rim of the gold bezels, most likely caused by the flipping process.
