Description: This listing is for the old Asian scroll painting that you see in the photos I purchased it at an estate sale in Oregon where I was not told it's history. It looks to me like it is old enough to be considered vintage and possibly antique. I would guess the early part of the 20th century. I leave it to the buyer to decide how old it is. I am guessing that it is Japanese but I am also wondering if it is Chinese. I am far from being an expert in Asian paintings. I leave it to the buyer to decide which one it is. As you can see, "Kisen" and "Ki-en, Hidden Peony" are written on two of the red and white labels. I cannot translate the writing on the scroll and box that are not written in English. One shiny label on the box reads, "Glendor" with an address that I think is in Portland, Oregon. I have not been able to find a shop named Glendor on the internet. When I have google translate the writing visible on the scroll when it is rolled up, the translation reads, "ilustrated by Sakuma Shinen". I do not trust the translation but perhaps it is a good clue as to who painted it. The top part of the scroll including the area where the painting is appears to be made from some kind of woven material that I am guessing to be silk. There is also something that I think might be gold to give the patterned areas some shine. It might be some other kind of material. The back of scroll is some kind of paper. Including the bone handles, the rolled scroll measures close to 24 1/2 inches long. The scroll itself measures close to 22 3/8 in wide. Not including the amount that remains on the roller when it is unrolled the scroll measures close to 64 inches long. The off-white area where the painting is measures close to 17 by 46 1/4 inches. The rolled up scroll weighs close to 15.4 Oz. The box weighs close to 13 Oz. The box is made from some kind of wood that is not hardwood. It looks to me like it might be some kind of pine. The scroll roller ends look like ox bone. Some of the photos were taken outside under bright sunlight and show how the patterned material varies in appearance according to how the sun is reflecting off of it. There is no discoloring of the areas of the borders that have a pattern. The photos taken inside show lighter colors that are more representative of the actual colors as I see them. The photos taken outside were taken on an uneven surface so that the scroll is not laying as flat as it should. The condition is much like you see it in the photos. The scroll when unrolled show some small distortions of shape that I would say are from it being rolled. The patterned areas that frame the off-white area of the painting are in excellent shape with no discoloration. The area of the painting has minor variations in the color so that there are areas that are darker or look like the appearance has been altered by age. Otherwise the area of the painting is fine and as shown. There is some dark discoloration and a minor crack in one of the bone ends that you can see in the photos. The blue part of the paper backing at the bottom of the scroll looks like it is dark and from soil and exposure through the years with some darker spots. The shows signs of use in the form of scrapes and scratches. There are not cracks or chips in the box. I guarantee this scroll painting to be as described and represented by the photos. The photos are part of the description; please look at all of them. I allow three business days for shipping, but I usually ship the same or next day if possible. Please note that the lighting in my photos is uneven, and there might be shadows or reflections. The colors on my monitor look close to but not exactly like the actual colors; different monitors may show different colors. I often say that an item measures or weighs "approximately" because no measurements are exact, and some things are difficult to measure.I like to leave feedback after I know that the item has arrived and that the buyer is satisfied. I reserve the right to cancel any bids without explanation. I sometimes purchase signature delivery for my more valuable packages because of the possibility of them being stolen off of a porch or damaged by weather. I often, but not always, ship the same or next day. Often, I have a double-walled box custom made for larger items, which might result in a short delay. When I use packing peanuts, they are usually made from biodegradable materials. Please email me with any questions or suggestions. I do not ship on weekends, and I might not be available to answer emails on weekends. Thanks for looking at my ad.
